The 23rd Waco Police Citizens Academy

On March 20, 2003, students attending the Waco Citizens Police Academy met at the police firing range. Members of the Waco Police Special Ops Unit met them there. Students were able to see the gun qualification course, the Fire Arms Training System, and how officers train on the use of force.

Sgt. T. Rhudy explains the rules and regulations safety which are followed while at the firing range. Sgt. Rhudy is a supervisor with the Waco Police Special Operations Unit and has been a member since the unit was formed in 1990.
Special Ops Officer M. Chavez talks to the CPA students about officer's use of force policy. Officer Chavez is also assigned to the Patrol Division of the Waco Police Department.
CPA student using the Fire Arms Training System to get a feel for the split second decision that has to be made by officers in life and death confrontations. The F.A.T.S. simulator allows officers to better train for situations that may require the use of deadly force. These are situations that all officer hope to avoid but that are becoming more frequent with the proliferation of guns in the hands of criminals.

The F.A.T. system allows the officer to train with handguns similar to what they carry. The system shows the officer where his shots hit, how long it took before he shot after the threat appeared, and which of his shots were lethal.

Special Ops officers exhibit their weapons and other tools used to make high-risk entry when serving warrants.
Sgt. Rhudy talks about the different types of rifles they use and the reasons why they've had to go to these weapons. Special Ops unit is also reponsible for protecting President G.W. Bush when he is in town.
CPA students handle one of the sniper rifles.

Officer Williams explains the use of Pressure Points and there use in gaining compliance from uncooperative suspects. Officer Chavez volunteered to be the bad guy. hmm....Officer Chavez is enjoying this a little too much!

CPA student, John Hand, is shown how the Beretta 9 mm works. The pack seen hanging from his back pocket is what relays the data to the computer, which scores his performance on the simulator.
Just point and squeeze.....Oops...you missed....no...that was your partner....the guy with the mask and the gun was the bad guy.
CPA student, Jason Ramirez, trains with the ASP expandable baton on the punching bag. The baton is considered an intermediate weapon and is used when empty hand strikes are not enough to stop an attack.

The class watches as officer shot at silhouettes with live rounds. It was a very interesting night for the CPA students. Waco P.D. hopes that classes like these will give our citizens a more realistic view of what officer can and cannot do when confronted by armed suspects.

Thanks to Sgt. Rhudy and the other Special ops officer.

A speical thanks to Elfie for taking the pictures.
